The Blue Angel’s Trumpet is an evergreen shrub from Argentina that has stunning, blue-purple, trumpet-shaped flowers. The flowers resemble miniature angel’s trumpet flowers (Brugmansia spp.) hence the common name. It is a woody shrub up to about 6 feet in height with elliptic, medium green leaves and horizontal branches. In the spring and summer, rich purple flowers are born in small clusters on the twigs. The nodding flowers are about 2 inches long and are on long, slender stalks. They open from downy, light green flower buds. The blue angel’s trumpet is a superb, rare and beautiful plant that is not often seed in cultivation but is well worth growing. In the right environment, it is an easy plant to grow. If the seeds are started early enough in the year, it can be grown and flower as a half-hardy annual. It has a fast growth rate. It enjoys mostly-sunny conditions. In warmer conditions, it's best to give it some afternoon shade. It prefers moist, well-draining soil and regular feeding. The leaves, flowers and fruits are toxic. Hardy in zones 9-12.
Growing Instructions
- The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Put the soil in a pot. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet.
